TEACHER OF THE YEAR: Check out all the 2010 nominees
SLIDESHOW: John Castro honored
SACRAMENTO, CA - A Sacramento fourth grade teacher with his own website and a multimedia approach to educating took top honors in this year's Esquire Imax News10 Teacher of the Year Awards.
John Castro found his passion for teaching as a student reading tutor while he was still in college.
He now teaches fourth grade at Earl Warren Elementary School, where he has been for the last seven years.
Castro's award comes after an evening honoring 12 area school teachers. This year's panel was heavy on math and science and all brought family, friends and co-workers to the Esquire Imax Theatre for Thursday night's ceremony.
Each teacher received a certificate for dinner courtesy of the L Wine Lounge and Urban Kitchen.
In addition to the dinner certificate, Castro was awarded a $5,000 check from Schools Credit Union and a $5,000 backyard makeover from Gloria Landscaping.
While accepting his award, Castro said the cash will come in handy for his upcoming honeymoon. He and his fiancee will wed in August.
The Esquire Imax News10 Teacher of the Year awards special will air on News10 Saturday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. Encore airings of the special are scheduled for Wednesday, June 9 at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 12 at 5 p.m.
