The nation's largest mobile phone carrier announced it will charge customers a $2 "convenience fee" beginning Jan. 15.
The charge will apply to Verizon customers who pay their monthly bill by phone or online.
Verizon says customers can avoid the fee several ways: By electronic check online; electronic check by telephone; AutoPay via credit/debit or ATM card account; online from the customer's home-banking provider website; payment in person at a Verizon Wireless store; Verizon gift or rebate card; a paper check or money order mailed to Verizon.
A statement from the company said the charge will help it cover costs incurred when its customers pay their bills online, by mobile device and telephone.
