LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) -- Hawaii officials say they're embarrassed by
how stranded tourists were treated when a security guard at a Kauai
airport kicked them out into a storm.
Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz says he called an elderly couple from
Littleton, Colo., Thursday to apologize. He said the treatment they
experienced Tuesday goes against Hawaii's aloha spirit. He's trying
to reach others, who officials say includes a pregnant woman and
State Department of Transportation spokesman Daniel Meisenzahl
said when heavy rains canceled some flights about 20 passengers
were stuck at the Lihue airport with nowhere else to go. The small
airport is normally closed after 10 p.m., and a security guard
kicked them out.
About 10 of them spent the night at a shelter.
The guard has since been reassigned.
