Fairfield Police Bust Identity Theft Ring

FAIRFIELD, CA - Fairfield police Thursday arrested six in what they say was an identity theft ring.

Officers went to the Fairfield Marriott motel on Holiday Lane on a tip a woman they were looking for in connection with forgery, check fraud, and possession of stolen property, was staying there, said Robert Bunting with Fairfield police. Officers knocked on the door of the room where the woman, Melissa Haney, 30, was believed to be staying and she answered the door. She was arrested and illegal narcotics were found on her person, said Bunting.

Bunting said officers obtained a search warrant for the room where they recovered stolen checks and mail and items relating to fraud and identity theft.

Three men came to the room during the course of the search and were arrested. In all, four Fairfield residents, one Vacaville man and a resident of Anderson were taken into custody.

Bunting said Haney is suspected of burglary, conspiracy to commit fraud, fictitious checks, and possession of controlled substances. Also arrested was Sean Shepherd, 39, of Fairfield on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property, forgery, and possession of controlled substances.

Bunting said Linda Gaither, 45, of Fairfield, and Jody Gaither, 19, of Anderson were arrested for conspiracy to commit fraud; Gregory Saabye, 28, of Vacaville, was arrested on warrants related to possessing stolen property and James Neal, 35, of Fairfield, was arrested on an outstanding parole warrant.

Officers recovered three computers and 23 bags of evidence in connection with the arrests, Bunting said. Investigators continue to go through the items recovered to identify victims.
