SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- (AP) -- The state Senate leader says a bill to delay the elimination of the 400 community redevelopment agencies statewide does not have sufficient support to pass by the Feb. 1 deadline.
Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, said, "it's not going to happen" because he and the Assembly speaker are skeptical and Gov. Brown is "dead set against the bill."
City leaders were trying to fashion a compromise with lawmakers after the state Supreme Court ruled the Legislature had the authority to eliminate the agencies and use their property tax money for local services.
Steinberg said Thursday that supporters should concentrate on reviving affordable housing projects and diverting assets to other economic development projects.
Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Pacoima, had proposed extending the deadline for closing redevelopment agencies to April 15.
