SACRAMENTO, CA -- A mother's love for her son helps her push through her family's devastating loss and pain to talk to other teens about safe choices while in a car.

Martha Tessmer lost her son Donovan four years ago and in his memory, she shares what happened through the Impact Teen Drivers Program. It offers outreach to help teens stay safe on the roads.

Martha spoke at the State Capitol last week and her passion didn't leave many dry eyes.

Donovan wasn't wearing his seatbelt when the car his girlfriend was driving crashed while coming home from the movies in Madera County.

Martha says she and her husband tried to do all the right things in raising Donovan and keeping him safe.  But one bad decision not to buckle up, along with his girlfriend's reckless driving cost Donovan his life, Martha says.

Martha hopes teens will realize every choice in a car counts and could be their last.
