CARMICHAEL, CA - A lot of great teachers won't be able to return to the classroom next fall.

Pink slips just went out to thousands of teachers across Northern California, among them, News10 Teacher of the Month Nicki Garcia.

"I hate to say it, but I'm used to it by now," Garcia said. "It's all based on tenure, seniority and I have to go with it."

Garcia works as a 4th and 5th grade teacher at Thomas Kelly Elementary in Carmichael. It's her second time getting a lay off notice.

Garcia won News10 Teacher of the Month in March 2012 and was nominated as a Teacher of the Year in the San Juan Unified School District.

Many parents are crying foul.

"The kids adore her, she has great energy and is an amazing teacher, it's hard to believe she may not be back next year," parent Paige Blockmon said.

Two hundred teachers received pink slips in the San Juan District.

"I'm not alone, there are wonderful teachers out there who are in my shoes," Garcia said. "It's very frustrating, but that's the reality we're dealing with."

The school district said the choice to issue lay offs to Garcia and 200 other teachers was based on seniority. Garcia may know next month if she'll be allowed to return to the classroom next fall.
