A San Francisco couple have been charged with murder over the shooting of a Los Angeles man who allegedly was their 17-year-old daughter's pimp, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Barry Gilton, 38, and his longtime girlfriend, Lupe Mercado, 37, are accused of first-degree murder in the slaying of Calvin Sneed early June 4 near Candlestick Park. The 22-year-old Sneed, identified as a Compton gang member, was shot once with a .40-caliber handgun while driving. Prosecutors said Gilton was the gunman.
They were arrested Saturday. Both appeared in court Wednesday and were ordered held on $2 million bail, the paper says.
Their attorneys said the couple have been together since childhood and have three other children. The Chronicle writes that their oldest daughter "disappeared some time ago" and that they discovered she was engaged in prostitution, with Sneed as her pimp.
They tried but failed to get her back, tracking her and Sneed to the Los Angeles area.
Police suspect that Gilton or Mercado also shot at Sneed in his car in North Hollywood on May 27.
If convicted, Gilton, who was found guilty of felony drug charges in 1996, could go prison for life without parole. Mercado could face 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
Their 17-year-old daughter and three other children are staying with family members.
