DTV broadcasting began in Sacramento in November 1999. The FCC’s plan was for stations to broadcast both analog and digital for an extended period of time that has turned out to be about nine years. Each station received a second channel assignment for its digital signal. We were assigned UHF channel 61. The other stations in our market also received DTV channel assignments in the UHF band. These were considered temporary assignments.
Now, in 2008, each station is required to make a decision on a permanent channel assignment and file an application with the FCC. We at News10 have elected to move our DTV signal from channel 61 back to channel 10. To do this, we have installed a new digital transmitter that will replace the digital transmitter now on channel 61. On February 17, 2009, we will turn off both the channel 61 digital and the channel 10 analog transmitters and then connect our channel 10 antenna to our new channel 10 digital transmitter.
Most Sacramento stations have elected to stay in the UHF band, but not all. News10 will be moving back to channel 10 and KVIE will be moving to channel 9. The chart below shows what all the stations are doing.
