GREAT HANG UP- Cyclist Kathy Hurd and her friend Kathy Sturgeon were riding June 18,2008 on El Dorado Hills Boulevard when they were struck by a 19 year-old drunk driver. Hurd's back was broken in 15 places and Sturgeon suffered a traumatic brain injury.
Hurd is now passionate about spreading awareness of distracted and dangerous driving. She works for P.A.R.T.Y or Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth. P.A.R.T.Y takes teens inside a hospital for a look at an accident's aftermath and features talks with traumatic brain injury survivors. Right now the national program is mostly offered in the Folsom area but would like to expand its outreach.
In addition to her work with P.A.R.T.Y, Hurd is back biking again and says she never really doubted she would return to cycling.
She tells Melissa Crowley she believes God saved her and Kathy for a reason and this effort with P.A.R.T.Y just "feels right."
